Disability

About the Scope Foundation Mission

The project is a holistic approach aimed at all around development of PwD, their sustainable livelihood, rehabilitation and integration into society and their participation in mainstream developmental process. The main component of the project is creation of livelihood opportunities for PwD to help them to attain financial independence. This is planned to be achieved through formation of SHGs among PwDs and providing training as per their need in any suitable employment activity for vocational rehabilitation. The project also aims to address the needs of PWD children and their guardian and facilitate their better upbringing and development in the family in particular and society in general .

Purpose & Priorities:

  1. Identification of all persons with disability in particular block/blocks and assessment of their socio-economic status.
  2. To promote socialization and participation of PWDs through formation of their Self Help Groups and create a federated structure of these SHGs
  3. Medical assessment of individual PWDs to explore options of medical intervention to reduce the impact of disability in their lives.
  4. To create livelihood opportunities for PWD by providing vocational training and providing financial access through SHG structure and thereby helping them attain financial independence
  5. To break environmental barriers in accessing services, especially in education and health services
  6. To give better care to disabled children by training their care givers and prepare them to face challenges

Problem Statement

Persons with Disabilities tend to face social discrimination right from their childhood. The State Government as well as the Central Government has initiated lot of programmes and measures for the welfare of PWDs and enacted a number of legislation for their welfare. However, most such schemes are based on medical model of rehabilitation and merely address the medical needs and rights and entitlements of PWDs. In the absence of any programme to develop their residual skills and day to day functional abilities, PWDs tend to grow up being dependent on others and deprived of gainful livelihood opportunities in most cases.

About the Theme

The relationship between poverty and disability goes both ways: disability increases the risk of poverty , and the conditions of poverty increase the risk of disability.

Persons with disabilities (PwDs) in India face discrimination and marginalisation every day. They lack access to essential services and are restricted in movement due to lack of infrastructure and ease of access. Their inability to contribute towards income of the family, and incurring expenses in treatment and medication, are seen as an additional burden, especially in a low-income household.

As opportunities for sustainable income generation are directly tied to a person’s access to finance, markets, and networks, persons with disabilities usually face significant challenges in accessing these, due to:

  • non-inclusive regulations and policy,
  • lack of resource allocation,
  • stigma and societal prejudice,
  • low educational participation, and
  • inability to access their own communities and city spaces.

We need to do much more to ensure that women with disabilities are mainstreamed into projects that seek to empower women as entrepreneurs and change agents.

Disabled people have agreed 12 basic requirements to ensure equality for all within our society.

  • Full access to the Environment (towns, countryside & buildings)
  • An accessible Transport system.
  • Technical aids and equipment.
  • Accessible/adapted housing.
  • Personal Assistance and support.
  • Inclusive Education and Training.
  • An adequate Income
  • Equal opportunities for Employment
  • Appropriate and accessible Information
  • Advocacy (towards self-advocacy)
  • Counselling
  • Appropriate and Accessible Health Care

Scope focusses towards building an innovative community program where disabled persons themselves or members of their families take the lead in management, provision of services and decision making.

A robust disability inclusion program makes it easier for all employees to perform to their highest potential. When done well, it promotes a culture that celebrates difference. It encourages employees to “bring their whole selves to work”—something many forward-thinking companies want for their employees
