About the Scope Foundation Mission

SCOPE is a livelihood development organization that works to alleviate hunger, poverty, and disease in the most isolated rural villages in Bihar. Scope does not give away food or material aid, but we take a big-picture, holistic approach focusing on the entire community rather than on one issue. Scope has found that problems and issues within rural community are all interrelated and that you cannot solve one problem in isolation.

Scope invests in poor people and their communities by training and inspiring them to create their own life-changing solutions through programs in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Capacity Building, Handicraft, Health & Hygiene, Literacy, Water, Leadership, Financial management and Environmental protection.

Scope listens to people, without predetermined ideas, to identify and address their needs, resulting in greater community involvement and long-lasting impact. Scope provides knowledge and training to teach skills and gain confidence, then local leaders and organizations emerge and work together to carry on the work. This makes Scope programs very efficient and creates lasting change rather than a short-term fix.

Problem Statement

The condition of most farmers is terrible. About 80% of farmers in India are marginal (less than 1 hectare) or small farmers (1–2 hectare) category. Agriculture supports about 60% of employment but contributes only 17% to GDP. Every day, there are reports of Indian farmer suicides from different parts of the country. Farmer suicides account for 11.2% of all suicides in India. Activists and scholars have offered a number of conflicting reasons for farmer suicides, such as anti farmer laws, high debt burdens, poor government policies, corruption in subsidies, crop failure, public mental health, personal issues and family problems. The recent empirical evidences in the literature attributed the prevalence of rural unemployment and under-employment, to increasing population pressures, an ever declining land-man ratio, small and fragmented holdings, highly iniquitous land distribution structures and lack of non- farm employment opportunities in rural area.
