Migration is an integral part of India’s socio-economic fabric, with over 100 million internal migrant workers who form the invisible backbone of the nation’s economy.
These workers, who constitute about one-fifth of the country’s workforce, move from states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to major destinations such as Maharashtra and Delhi in search of livelihoods. Despite their significant contributions, they face systemic challenges including precarious employment, poor living conditions, social exclusion, and health vulnerabilities. This document outlines these critical issues and details the collaborative support required from the government, employers, and civil society to ensure their welfare and uphold their dignity.
